Punjab and Haryana High Court disposes of PIL seeking issuance of power bills in Punjabi

31/01/2025BlogNo Comments

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has recently disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) raising concerns on the language used in electricity bills issued by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).

The petitioner argued the practice of issuing bills solely in English violated the Punjab Official Language Act, 1967.

However, during the hearing, the learned state counsel informed the court that the PSPCL had decided to issue electricity bills in both Punjabi and English languages, effective December 26, 2024.

This development addressed the petitioner’s grievance, and the court subsequently disposed of the PIL.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel granted the petitioner liberty to revisit the court if it was found that the bills were not being published, printed, and issued in Punjabi.
