Anju Rathi Rana becomes first woman Law Secretary of India

11/03/2025BlogNo Comments

Dr. Anju Rathi Rana has become the first woman to be appointed as Secretary to the Department of Legal Affairs of the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.

A notification issued last week by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet stated that the Indian Legal Services officer, currently serving as an Additional Secretary in the Department of Legal Affairs, would serve as the Union Law Secretary for an initial period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever was earlier.

Rana joined the Law Ministry as a Joint Secretary in 2017. She had previously served as a public prosecutor in the Delhi government for 18 years.

Rana has extensive experience in legal administration and policymaking. She would play a crucial role in shaping legal frameworks and guiding important judicial and legislative initiatives in the country.

Her appointment would further strengthen the role of the Department of Legal Affairs in providing legal advice to the government and overseeing key legislative matters.
