Justice Joymalya Bagchi sworn-in as Supreme Court judge

17/03/2025BlogNo Comments

Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn-in as a judge of the Supreme Court on Monday.

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath to office and secrecy to Justice Bagchi at a full court ceremony held in the first court.

On March 10, 2025, the Central government gave its approval to the elevation of Calcutta High Court judge Justice Joymalya Bagchi to the Apex Court.

On March 6, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and comprising Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Abhay S Oka as members, recommended the elevation of Justice Bagchi to the Apex Court.

The Collegium took into consideration the fact that the Apex Court Bench was currently represented by only one Judge from the High Court at Calcutta.

During his long tenure as a Judge of the High Court, Justice Bagchi has acquired significant experience in diverse fields of law, it noted.

It further took note of the fact that after the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir on July 18, 2013, there has not been any Chief Justice of India from the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Bagchi, currently at 11th rank in the all-India seniority list of High Court judges, including Chief Justices, would have a considerably long tenure of more than six years at the Supreme Court.

He is set to become the Chief Justice of India, following the retirement of Justice KV Viswanathan on May 25, 2031.

Justice Bagchi, however, would serve as CJI only for a relatively short duration since he would retire on October 2, 2031.

Justice Bagchi was appointed as a judge of the High Court at Calcutta on June 27, 2011 and transferred to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on January 4, 2021. He was repatriated to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021 and has been functioning there since then.

He has served as a judge of the High Court for more than 13 years.

Following the appointment of Justice Bagchi, the Supreme Court is now functioning with a strength of 33 judges, with one vacancy.
