Kanhaiya Lal murder case: Supreme Court refuses to stay release of Udaipur Files

09/07/2025BlogNo Comments

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the release of the film ‘Udaipur Files,’ based on the murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli.

Rejecting the petition filed by Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in Kanhaiya Lal’s murder case, the Bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymalya Bagchi told the petitioner to mention the plea before an appropriate Bench after July 14, when the Apex Court would reopen after the summer vacation.

The top court of the country refused to hear the plea on an urgent basis and further permitted the movie to release as scheduled on July 11.

The Counsel for the petitioner said the movie showed a one-sided picture of the events and may prejudice his right to fair trial.

Two Islamists allegedly beheaded tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan’s Udaipur town. They recorded the attack on camera and shared it online.

Lal was killed for allegedly sharing a social media post in support of Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who made certain derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

The investigation into the case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and 11 persons were booked in connection with the incident.
