NCLT Kolkata Bench suspends virtual hearing due to cyber security issue

01/08/2025BlogNo Comments

The Kolkata Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has suspended all proceedings conducted through video conferencing (VC) following a reported cyber security issue.

An official order issued by the NCLT Secretariat on July 30, 2025 said the VC proceedings at the Kolkata Bench have been suspended with immediate effect. The virtual proceedings would only be resumed after clearance was received from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) confirming that the systems were secure, it noted.

The Tribunal directed the stakeholders to appear physically before the Kolkata Bench until the VC facility was restored with additional safeguards.

As per the NCLT Kolkata Daily Cause List for August 1, 2025, all hearings were now being conducted in physical mode before members Rekha Kantilal Shah (T) and Labh Singh (J).

The incident, however, is not the first of its kind, with similar events being reported earlier from other Tribunals and even High Courts.

In December 2023, the Karnataka High Court suspended the live-streaming of its proceedings on grounds of potential misuse of its video-conferencing facilities.

The NCLT Mumbai temporarily paused virtual hearings last year after a hacking incident. The Tribunal alleged that hackers interrupted the proceedings by broadcasting inappropriate content.
