Sharjeel Imam withdraws Interim Bail plea filed to contest Bihar Assembly elections

14/10/2025BlogNo Comments

Sharjeel Imam has withdrawn his plea for interim bail filed before the Karkardooma Court in Delhi, which he had sought to enable him to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. His counsel informed the court that since Imam’s regular bail application is already pending before the Supreme Court, any request for interim relief should be pursued there instead. Following this submission, the plea was formally withdrawn.

Imam had earlier sought temporary bail for a two-week period, from October 15 to October 29, so he could file his nomination papers and campaign for the elections. The application was listed before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai, who recorded the withdrawal after the defence confirmed the decision.

The former Jawaharlal Nehru University student activist has been in custody since January 2020. Although he has been granted bail in a few other cases, he continues to remain in judicial custody under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the Delhi riots conspiracy case. His earlier plea for regular bail was dismissed by the Delhi High Court on September 2, and the matter is now pending before the Supreme Court
