Three new judges, Justice Dinesh Mehta, Justice Avneesh Jhingan, and Justice Chandrasekharan Sudha, took the oath of office at the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya. With their appointment, the total number of judges in the Delhi High Court has risen to 44, while the sanctioned strength remains 60.
Justice Mehta and Justice Jhingan were earlier serving at the Rajasthan High Court, while Justice Sudha was transferred from the Kerala High Court. The Central Government issued the official notification for their transfer on October 14, following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation made in August, which proposed the transfer of fourteen judges across different High Courts.
Justice Dinesh Mehta was appointed as a judge on November 16, 2016. During his career as an advocate, he handled a wide range of legal matters, including taxation, arbitration, banking, company law, electricity and environmental laws, insurance, agrarian and municipal disputes. He also appeared in cases related to constitutional, contractual, mining, election, civil, service, and industrial law.
Justice Avneesh Jhingan earned his law degree from Panjab University in 1992 and enrolled with the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council. He became an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2017 and was made a Permanent Judge in December 2018. He later joined the Rajasthan High Court on November 1, 2023.
Justice Chandrasekharan Sudha was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court on October 20, 2021. Before her elevation, she served as the Special POCSO Judge at Palakkad, Additional Director of the Kerala Judicial Academy, and District and Sessions Judge in Ernakulam.
