The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) has expressed concern over the High Court’s recent decision to hold court hearings on one Saturday each month, stating that the move was implemented without adequate consultation with the Bar.
The decision, announced through an official notification issued by the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, followed a full court meeting held on September 22, 2025. As per the notification, each bench of the court will be required to function on one Saturday every month until the end of the calendar year, in a bid to address the issue of case backlog and improve judicial efficiency.
While acknowledging the judiciary’s intent to enhance case disposal rates, the DHCBA highlighted that the Bar — a key stakeholder in the judicial system had not been properly consulted before such an important change was introduced. The association emphasized that decisions directly impacting lawyers’ schedules and professional obligations must be made after thorough dialogue between the Bench and the Bar.
In its statement, the DHCBA urged the court to reconsider the implementation of the new schedule. It suggested that either the decision be deferred pending consultation or a uniform Saturday schedule be framed in coordination with all benches and the Bar, ensuring minimal disruption to advocates and litigants alike.
The Bar Association also noted that lawyers often use Saturdays for client consultations, research, and case preparation, and that designating additional working days could affect work-life balance and professional planning.
This development underscores the continuing need for collaborative decision-making between the judiciary and the legal fraternity in administrative and procedural reforms. Effective coordination, the association argued, is essential for achieving efficiency in justice delivery while safeguarding the interests of those who serve within the system.
