The Supreme Court of India will convene a special vacation bench on December 22 to hear cases involving urgent and time-sensitive issues, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has announced. The decision has been taken to ensure that litigants with pressing concerns are not deprived of immediate judicial remedy during the court’s vacation period.
According to the Chief Justice, the vacation sitting will be dedicated exclusively to matters that demonstrate clear urgency and require immediate intervention of the apex court. He emphasised that while the court is on recess, access to justice must not be compromised, particularly in cases where delay could result in irreparable harm or serious consequences.
The Chief Justice clarified that the listing of cases before the vacation bench will follow established norms and procedures. Only those matters that satisfy the criteria of urgency will be taken up, ensuring that judicial time is utilised effectively while maintaining the balance between court recess and the need for swift adjudication.
The announcement reflects the Supreme Court’s continued commitment to upholding the rule of law and responding promptly to exceptional situations. By scheduling a vacation sitting, the apex court has reaffirmed its role as the guardian of fundamental rights and its readiness to act when circumstances demand immediate judicial attention, even during periods traditionally reserved for recess.
