The Union Government has notified the transfer of Justice Soumen Sen, presently serving as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, to the Kerala High Court, where he will assume office as Chief Justice.
Justice Sen is set to take charge following the superannuation of the incumbent Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar, who is due to demit office on January 9.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the transfer of Justice Sen in its meeting held on December 18, 2025, reflecting the established consultative process evolved through constitutional practice and judicial precedent governing appointments and transfers in the higher judiciary.
Following the transfer of Justice Sen to the Kerala High Court, Justice Revati Mohit Dere of the Bombay High Court has been designated to assume charge as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court upon his demission of office.
Justice Sen’s judicial journey traces its origins to the Calcutta High Court, from where he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court in September 2025. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal in January 1991 and built a distinguished practice spanning more than two decades before the Calcutta High Court on its original as well as appellate sides, in addition to appearances before subordinate courts, statutory tribunals and quasi-judicial fora.
During his years at the Bar, Justice Sen served as Senior Central Government Advocate and handled a broad spectrum of matters encompassing constitutional law, civil and commercial disputes, banking regulation, and domestic and international arbitration. His professional engagements included representing key statutory and regulatory bodies such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, and the Small Industries Development Bank of India, thereby contributing to jurisprudence in regulatory compliance and financial law.
He was elevated to the Bench of the Calcutta High Court on April 13, 2011. Over the course of his judicial tenure, Justice Sen has been associated with the adjudication of complex constitutional questions, commercial disputes, and matters involving public law remedies under Articles 226 and 227, reinforcing the principles of judicial review, institutional accountability, and rule of law.
