Centre notifies appointment of Justice Revati Mohite Dere as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court

02/01/2026BlogNo Comments

Exercising its constitutional authority under Articles 217 and 222 of the Constitution of India, the Union Government has appointed Justice Revati Mohite Dere of the Bombay High Court as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

The appointment follows the transfer of the incumbent Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice, Justice Soumen Sen, to the Kerala High Court, in accordance with the collegial process governing judicial transfers. The elevation of Justice Dere is pursuant to a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium at its meeting held on December 18, 2025, reflecting the consultative mechanism recognized in the Second and Third Judges Cases, which affirm the primacy of the judiciary in appointments while delineating the executive’s participatory role.

Justice Dere, currently the second senior-most judge of the Bombay High Court, was born in Pune and obtained her law degree from Symbiosis Law College, Pune. She built a distinguished practice at the Bombay High Court, appearing in civil, criminal, and constitutional matters, and also served as a public prosecutor for the Government of Maharashtra, contributing to the development of public law and prosecutorial jurisprudence in the state.

She was elevated as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013 and confirmed as a permanent judge in 2015. Since her elevation, she has served continuously at the Bombay High Court, adjudicating matters spanning statutory interpretation, enforcement of fundamental rights under Article 226, administrative law, and criminal jurisprudence. Her judicial contributions reflect adherence to precedent, purposive statutory construction, and the principles of fairness, proportionality, and rule of law.

Justice Dere’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court is expected to reinforce judicial administration and case-flow management in the northeastern jurisdiction, ensuring continuity, institutional efficiency, and the safeguarding of judicial independence in accordance with constitutional mandate.
