The Delhi High Court has ordered a comprehensive review of staff vacancies and workload distribution across courts in the capital following the suicide of a court employee, who reportedly took the extreme step due to excessive work pressure. The Court took note of the incident on the administrative side and stressed the need to address systemic issues affecting court staff.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya observed that court employees often function under intense pressure due to staff shortages and increasing workload. In response, the High Court directed that an audit be carried out to assess existing vacancies, staffing strength, and the manner in which work is allocated among personnel. The findings are expected to guide corrective measures, including rationalisation of cadres and filling up vacant posts.
The Court also acknowledged that steps are being taken to provide assistance and relief to the family of the deceased employee, in accordance with applicable rules. Emphasising the importance of employee welfare, the Bench underlined that administrative reforms are necessary to prevent such incidents in the future.
The direction came in the backdrop of the death of an ahlmad (court record keeper) posted at the Saket District Courts, whose suicide note reportedly referred to overwhelming work-related stress. The High Court disposed of the related proceedings after recording the steps being initiated to address the underlying concerns.
