Supreme Court permits counselling for 49 PG seats at Hamdard medical Institute amid affiliation row

30/01/2026BlogNo Comments

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed counselling to proceed for 49 postgraduate medical seats at Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, even as a dispute over the institute’s affiliation remains unresolved.

The top court clarified that its decision is an interim arrangement aimed at protecting the interests of students and preventing loss of valuable academic seats. It stressed that the counselling process would be subject to the final outcome of the pending litigation concerning the institute’s affiliation status.

The case stems from a disagreement between the medical institute and the concerned authorities over regulatory and affiliation-related approvals, which had put admissions for the postgraduate courses in limbo. With the academic calendar already under pressure, the court noted that delaying counselling further could cause irreparable harm to aspiring candidates.

However, the bench made it clear that no equities would be claimed by the institute or admitted students if the final verdict goes against the institute. The admissions, if made, will remain provisional and contingent on compliance with applicable regulations.

The matter will be taken up for further hearing at a later date, while the counselling for the 49 PG seats is allowed to move forward in the meantime.
