Mumbai Police defend FIR against UK Doctor Sangram Patil in PM Modi posts case before Bombay High Court

05/02/2026BlogNo Comments

The Mumbai Police has informed the Bombay High Court that the criminal case registered against UK-based doctor and content creator Dr. Sangram Patil over social media posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi is lawful and necessary. In its submission, the police argued that the posts in question were not mere expressions of opinion but contained content that was abusive, derogatory, and capable of disrupting public harmony.

According to the police affidavit, Patil’s online activity raises serious concerns as he is a foreign national who allegedly uploaded objectionable material while visiting India on a tourist visa. The authorities stated that such conduct could amount to a violation of visa conditions and warranted deeper scrutiny, especially given the wide reach of his digital platforms.

The police further told the court that the investigation is aimed at determining whether Patil acted alone or with the assistance of individuals based in India who may have helped circulate or promote the content. They stressed that his continued presence in the country is crucial for effective investigation, noting that monitoring or questioning him after his return to the United Kingdom would be difficult.

Mumbai Police also claimed that Patil continued posting allegedly inflammatory content even after arriving in India, including commentary that, in their view, could incite public disorder by presenting sensitive incidents in a misleading manner. The FIR, registered in December 2025, was followed by the issuance of a Look Out Circular (LOC) to prevent him from leaving the country while the probe is ongoing.

Patil has challenged both the FIR and the LOC before the High Court, arguing that the case is an abuse of criminal law and infringes upon his right to free speech. He has sought protection from coercive action and permission to travel back to the UK. The police, however, maintained that Patil has not fully cooperated with investigators, including failing to provide electronic devices for forensic examination, further justifying the continuation of the investigation.
