The Supreme Court of India has received applications from 293 lawyers requesting designation as Senior Advocates, a distinction regarded as one of the most prestigious honours for members of the legal profession.
The applications were submitted following public notices issued by the Court earlier this year inviting eligible advocates to apply for the designation. The process forms part of the Court’s periodic exercise to identify lawyers who have demonstrated outstanding professional ability, experience, and contribution to the legal field.
In a recent notice, the Court’s Committee responsible for evaluating candidates invited members of the Bar and other stakeholders to submit their views regarding the applicants. These inputs may include comments, suggestions, or objections concerning any of the candidates who have sought the designation.
The Court clarified that such feedback must be supported by relevant and verifiable material. Submissions can be made either to the Secretariat of the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates or through the designated email address. The deadline for sending comments has been set for April 1, 2026, by 4:30 PM.
After receiving the responses, the Committee will review the material and assess the applicants according to the criteria laid down by the Court. The recommendations will then be placed before the Full Court of the Supreme Court, which will take the final decision on conferring the Senior Advocate designation.
Under Indian law, courts may designate advocates as Senior Advocates based on factors such as their standing at the Bar, professional integrity, legal expertise, and contributions to the development of the law. Lawyers who receive this recognition are subject to certain professional restrictions but are acknowledged for their distinguished standing in the legal community
