Ex-Supreme Court Judge submits evidence backing Nirav Modi in UK Court

19/03/2026BlogNo Comments

In a fresh turn in the extradition proceedings involving Nirav Modi, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India has presented evidence before a court in the United Kingdom in support of the businessman’s case. The testimony forms part of Modi’s continued efforts to resist extradition to India.

The evidence reportedly raises concerns about the fairness of the criminal justice process in India, particularly in cases that attract significant public and political attention. It suggests that prevailing circumstances could affect the ability of an accused person to receive a free and unbiased trial, an argument that has been central to Modi’s defence strategy.

Modi, who faces serious allegations of financial fraud involving major Indian banks, has been challenging his extradition for years. His legal team has consistently argued that returning him to India would expose him to conditions and processes that may not fully meet standards of fairness and justice.

The inclusion of testimony from a former apex court judge adds weight to the defence’s claims, as such expert opinions are often used in foreign courts to evaluate the legal systems of requesting countries. However, the UK court is expected to carefully assess this submission alongside other evidence, including assurances provided by Indian authorities.

While this development strengthens Modi’s attempt to reopen or delay the proceedings, it does not determine the final outcome. The decision will ultimately depend on the court’s assessment of whether extradition would be consistent with legal safeguards and the protection of the accused’s rights.

The case remains a significant example of the complexities involved in international extradition, especially in high-value economic offences where questions of legal standards and cross-border cooperation come into sharp focus.
