Justice Surya Kant has called on High Courts across India to accelerate the process of judicial appointments, emphasizing that delays continue to strain the justice delivery system. Speaking on the issue, he highlighted that a large number of vacancies in the judiciary not only slow down case disposal but also affect public confidence in the legal system.
He stressed that timely appointments are essential to ensure efficiency and reduce the growing backlog of cases. According to him, High Courts must work proactively with collegiums and relevant authorities to streamline the selection process and avoid unnecessary delays.
Alongside the call for speed, the Chief Justice also underscored the urgent need for greater gender diversity within the judiciary. He noted that while women have made significant strides in the legal profession, their representation on the bench especially in higher courts remains disproportionately low.
Justice Surya Kant encouraged High Courts to consciously recommend more qualified women candidates for judicial positions. He pointed out that a more inclusive judiciary not only reflects societal diversity but also enriches judicial perspectives and strengthens the institution as a whole.
He concluded by reiterating that judicial reforms must go hand in hand with inclusivity. Ensuring both timely appointments and broader representation, he said, is key to building a more responsive, balanced, and forward-looking justice system in India.
