The Delhi High Court has directed the police to provide protection to the family of 27-year-old Tarun Butolia, who died in a violent clash during Holi celebrations in Uttam Nagar earlier this year.
Justice Girish Kathpalia asked the Additional DCP to ensure that the concerned SHO shares his personal mobile number with the family so they can reach out in case of any emergency.
The Court heard the plea, filed by the victim’s family, who expressed apprehension of serious threats to their lives and liberty. They also sought the removal of allegedly inflammatory, threatening, and communally sensitive videos related to the incident from social media platforms.
The police informed the Court that adequate security measures were already in place. The Additional DCP stated that CCTV cameras had been installed in the family’s lane and nearby areas, and police guards had been set up to maintain communal harmony.
Recording this, the Court reiterated that the SHO must remain accessible to the family during distress.
The police further submitted that over 250 objectionable videos and posts had already been taken down from social media. The Court directed the family to provide specific details of any remaining such content to the local SHO, who was instructed to take prompt action in accordance with the law.
In light of these assurances, counsel for the petitioners submitted that the family was satisfied, and the Court disposed of the petition.
The incident dates back to March 4, when Tarun was killed during a clash between his family and their neighbours in JJ Colony. According to Delhi Police, the violence was triggered after water from a balloon thrown by a girl from Tarun’s family accidentally splashed onto a woman from the neighbouring family during Holi celebrations.
