The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended the elevation of nine advocates as judges of the Calcutta High Court.
The Apex Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and comprising Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice JK Maheshwari, Justice Vikram Nath and Justice MM Sundresh as its members, took the decision during two meetings held on May 11 and 12, 2026, as part of the ongoing process of judicial appointments to the constitutional courts.
The advocates recommended for elevation are Advocates Indranil Roy, Aryak Dutt, Atarup Banerjee, Sandip Kumar De, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee and Rishad Medora.
The appointments will take effect after the Union government processes the Collegium’s recommendations and the President of India issues the warrants of appointment in accordance with the constitutional procedure governing appointments to the higher judiciary.
The Calcutta High Court has a sanctioned strength of 72 judges, comprising 54 permanent judges and 18 additional judges. As of May 1, 2026, the High Court was functioning with 42 judges, including 31 permanent and 11 additional judges, leaving 30 vacancies. If the recommendations are cleared by the Union government, the High Court’s working strength will rise to 51 judges.
