Supreme Court Collegium recommends elevation of Advocate Amit Lahoti as Madhya Pradesh High Court judge

03/06/2026BlogNo Comments

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Advocate Amit Lahoti as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The Apex Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and comprising Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice JK Maheshwari, Justice Vikram Nath and Justice MM Sundresh, took the decision during a meeting held on June 2, 2026.

An official resolution issued after the meeting stated that the Supreme Court Collegium had approved the proposal for elevating Advocate Lahoti from the Bar to the Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The recommendation forms part of the constitutional process for the appointment of High Court judges, under which the proposal will now be forwarded to the Central Government for further consideration and issuance of a warrant of appointment after completion of the necessary consultative and administrative procedures.

The recommendation assumes significance in view of the existing vacancies in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. At present, the High Court is functioning with a working strength of 40 judges against its sanctioned strength of 53, leaving 13 judicial vacancies to be filled.

The appointment, once cleared by the Central government and formally notified, is expected to contribute towards reducing the vacancy position and strengthening the judicial capacity of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
