The Union Government has reappointed Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India for a further term of three years, ensuring continuity in its legal representation before the Supreme Court and other constitutional courts.
The reappointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and communicated through an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 20.
As per the notification, Mehta’s fresh tenure will commence on July 1, 2026, and continue for three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Mehta has been serving as the Solicitor General since October 10, 2018. He was previously reappointed with effect from July 1, 2023, for a term ending on June 30, 2026.
As the country’s second-highest law officer after the Attorney General for India, he has represented the Union government in a wide range of high-profile matters involving constitutional interpretation, federalism, national security, taxation, electoral laws, citizenship issues, digital governance, regulatory frameworks and Centre-State disputes. He has also regularly appeared before the Constitution Benches of the Supreme Court in cases carrying significant public law and policy implications.
A senior advocate from Gujarat, Mehta joined the Union Government’s legal team as an Additional Solicitor General in 2014 before being elevated as Solicitor General in 2018. With the latest extension, he will continue among the longest-serving holders of the office in recent years.
The ACC has also approved the reappointment of five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for the Supreme Court. While Senior Advocates Vikramjit Banerjee and KM Nataraj have been reappointed for a further term of three years with effect from July 1, 2026, Senior Advocates Suryaprakash V Raju, N Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati have been granted fresh three-year terms with effect from June 30, 2026. Their appointments will remain in force for three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Banerjee was first appointed as an ASG for the Supreme Court on March 5, 2018, while Nataraj assumed office on January 14, 2019. Both were subsequently reappointed with effect from July 1, 2023. Raju, Venkataraman and Bhati were initially appointed as ASGs for the Supreme Court on June 30, 2020, and were reappointed for a second term from June 30, 2023.
In a separate decision, the ACC approved the reappointment of Senior Advocate Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court. Sharma has been granted a further tenure of six months with effect from July 1, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Sharma was first appointed as ASG for the Delhi High Court on July 1, 2020, and was subsequently reappointed from July 1, 2023, for a term scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2026.
