Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant is set to inaugurate the Commonwealth Peace Mediation Conference (CPMC) 2026, scheduled to be held in Jaipur from July 31 to August 2.
The three-day international conference, centred on the theme “Peace Mediation and the Rule of Law,” will bring together judges, lawyers, mediators, policymakers, diplomats, academics and dispute-resolution practitioners from across the Commonwealth and other jurisdictions.
The conference is being organised by the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority in association with the Supreme Court Bar Association, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and Nivaaran Mediators of the Supreme Court of India.
The CPMC 2026 seeks to examine the role of mediation beyond its conventional character as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism and explore its potential as an institutional instrument for peacebuilding, access to justice and social cohesion.
The opening ceremony on July 31 will be inaugurated by CJI Surya Kant. Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, Attorney General for India R Venkataramani, Commonwealth Lawyers Association President Steven Thiru and Supreme Court Bar Association President and Senior Advocate Vikas Singh are also scheduled to address the inaugural session.
The conference will feature deliberations across eight thematic areas, including environmental justice, family mediation, criminal justice, commercial disputes, workplace conflicts, infrastructure and public projects, community mediation and global peacebuilding.
The discussions are expected to focus on the capacity of mediation to facilitate consensual dispute resolution, reduce adversarial litigation, strengthen institutional trust and contribute to the development of more inclusive and resilient justice systems.
The conference is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 16 of the United Nations, which seeks to promote peace, justice and strong institutions. It also draws upon the Commonwealth’s commitment to the rule of law and peaceful resolution of disputes.
The organisers have conceived CPMC 2026 as an international platform for examining how mediation can operate across the continuum of conflict—from family and community disputes to complex commercial and infrastructure conflicts and broader questions of global peace.
The inaugural ceremony will also witness the release of the autobiography of Senior Advocate and Nivaaran Vice-President Aruneshwar Gupta, titled Death of My Mistress—The Law; Birth of My Love—Justice.
The conference is expected to culminate in the proposed adoption of the “Jaipur Declaration on Peace Mediation,” reflecting a collective commitment to mainstreaming mediation as a means of advancing peaceful dispute resolution and strengthening the rule of law across the Commonwealth and beyond.
