President appoints Chirag Bhanu Singh as Himachal Pradesh High Court judge; Bhupesh Sharma, Yogesh Jaswal named Additional judges

The President has appointed Chirag Bhanu Singh as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, while Bhupesh Sharma and Yogesh Jaswal have been appointed as Additional Judges of the court.

The Ministry of Law and Justice’s Department of Justice notified the appointments on August 27, 2026. The appointments were made under Articles 217(1) and 224 of the Constitution.

Singh’s appointment as a permanent judge will take effect from the date he assumes office. Sharma and Jaswal have been appointed as Additional Judges for two years, effective from the dates they assume charge.

Singh was first recommended for elevation in December 2022 by the Himachal Pradesh High Court Collegium, along with Arvind Malhotra. The Supreme Court Collegium considered the proposal in July 2023 but deferred it, and in January 2024 asked the High Court Collegium to reconsider the matter.

The issue later reached the Supreme Court. In Chirag Bhanu Singh v. High Court of H.P., the Court on September 6, 2024 directed that the proposal be reconsidered by the full High Court Collegium rather than by the Chief Justice alone.

On June 2, 2026, the Supreme Court Collegium approved the names of Singh, Sharma and Jaswal for appointment to the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The Union government has now formally notified their appointments.
