The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Kaushik Goswami, presently serving as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court, as a Permanent Judge of the High Court.
The recommendation was approved at the Collegium’s meeting held on September 23, 2026. In its resolution, the Collegium stated that it had approved the proposal for the appointment of Justice Goswami as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court.
Justice Goswami was elevated from the Bar and appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on November 2, 2023. He subsequently took oath and assumed office on November 10, 2023. He is currently serving at the Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court.
Born on September 4, 1975, Justice Goswami pursued his schooling at Don Bosco School, Guwahati, and Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, New Delhi. He obtained his Bachelor of Social Legal Sciences degree and LL.B. from ILS Law College, Pune.
He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on July 27, 2000, and went on to build a substantial practice before the Gauhati High Court.
Before his elevation to the Bench, Justice Goswami served as Standing Counsel for the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Haflong, and the Gauhati High Court. He also served as Additional Senior Government Advocate of the Gauhati High Court between May 2021 and July 2022.
His professional engagements additionally included serving as an Amicus Curiae before the Gauhati High Court and as Panel Advocate for the Official Liquidator attached to the High Court.
The Gauhati High Court designated him as a Senior Advocate on May 19, 2022, a position he held until his elevation to the Bench the following year.
The recommendation forms part of a broader set of decisions taken by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 23 concerning the permanent appointment of Additional Judges in various High Courts. Alongside Justice Goswami, the Collegium recommended Justice Subhash Upadhyay for permanent appointment to the Uttarakhand High Court and five Additional Judges each for the Kerala and Andhra Pradesh High Courts.
The Collegium’s recommendation will now proceed through the prescribed appointment process.
