Bombay High Court takes suo motu cognisance of Goa nightclub fire, seeks preventive safety measures from State

The Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the recent fire incident at a nightclub in Goa, which has raised serious concerns over the public safety and regulatory compliance in entertainment venues. The court’s intervention comes in the wake of reports highlighting potential lapses in fire safety measures, which could have posed grave risks to patrons.

A division bench of the High Court observed that such incidents underline the urgent need for robust preventive mechanisms to avoid loss of life and property. Emphasising that safety standards cannot be compromised, the court sought a detailed response from the Goa government on the steps being taken to ensure strict enforcement of fire safety norms across nightclubs, bars, and similar establishments.

The court has asked the State to outline existing regulations, inspection protocols, and emergency preparedness measures, while also indicating that gaps in implementation must be addressed proactively. It noted that authorities cannot act only after tragedies occur, and that preventive governance is essential, especially in places that witness large public gatherings.

The High Court signalled its intent to play an active role in safeguarding public interest. The matter is expected to be monitored further, with the court examining whether additional directions are required to strengthen safety frameworks and accountability mechanisms in the State.
