The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday pulled up the State of West Bengal for defying Supreme Court orders by permitting candidates declared as tainted in the cash-for-jobs recruitment scam to reapply in the fresh recruitment drive.
The single-judge Bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya asked the Counsel appearing for the state government to explain why there was no express bar to debar the tainted candidates from applying in the fresh recruitment process notified by the West Bengal government on May 30, 2025.
Noting that there were the loopholes in the notification, the single-judge Bench said it was not interfering since leave was granted in the case.
The petitioners moved the Apex Court challenging the state government’s recruitment notification.
They submitted that the notification did not contain any prohibition on the candidates who had been ousted from their jobs by the Apex Court from applying under the present process.
They further said that the state’s notification did not heed the top court order.
The High Court granted liberty to the petitioners to seek clarification before the Supreme Court.
The Counsel appearing for the state government prayed for time to come back at a later date with clarifications.
