The Union of India on Saturday approved the appointment of three lawyers as Additional Judges to the Calcutta High Court.
Those appointed as judges include Advocates Smita Das De, Reetobroto Kumar Mitra and Om Narayan Rai.
The information was shared by Minister of Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
The tweet said that in exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed Advocates Smita Das De, Reetobroto Kumar Mitra and Om Narayan Rai as Additional Judges in the Calcutta High Court.
On February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recommended the appointment of five lawyers for judgeship, including the three new appointees, as well as Advocates Md Talay Masood Siddiqui and Krishnaraj Thaker.
The Centre is yet to clear the names of
Advocate Siddiqui and Advocate Thaker.
As on February 1, the Calcutta High Court is functioning with 43 judges against a sanctioned strength of 72, with a vacancy position of 29.
