The Union government on Saturday approved the appointment of two lawyers as judges of the Allahabad High Court.

The information was confirmed by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law & Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal via a post on his official handle on X.

As per his tweet, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Advocates Amitabh Kumar Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla as judges of the Allahabad High Court with effect from the date they assumed charge of their respective offices.”

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of these two advocates on March 25.

The High Court is currently functioning with 85 judges, including Chief Justice Arun Bhansali, as opposed to a sanctioned strength of 160.

The Collegium recently recommended the appointment of 26 judges to the Allahabad High Court. Of the 26 names, 14 are Judicial Officers and 12 are Advocates, including four women. The said recommendations are awaiting government clearance.
