A serious allegation of violence inside a courtroom has surfaced from Delhi’s Tis Hazari Courts, where a lawyer claimed that he was assaulted by a group of men during court proceedings. According to the allegation, the incident took place in the presence of an Additional District Judge when members associated with the opposing side allegedly entered the courtroom, shut the doors, and physically attacked both the advocate and his client.
The lawyer later raised the issue before the Supreme Court, stating that despite the gravity of the incident, the local police had not acted promptly. He brought the matter to the attention of the Chief Justice of India during an oral mention, seeking intervention.
Responding to the submission, the Chief Justice of India expressed strong disapproval of any form of violence within court premises. Stressing that lawlessness cannot be tolerated in the justice system, the CJI remarked that such conduct amounts to “gunda raj” and undermines the rule of law. However, the Chief Justice also pointed out that the appropriate course would be to submit a formal written complaint to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, as the incident pertained to the district judiciary.
The CJI assured that once the complaint is formally placed before the competent authority, necessary action would be taken in accordance with the law, reiterating that courts must remain safe spaces for judges, lawyers, and litigants alike.
