CJI-designate Justice BR Gavai supports ceasefire between India and Pakistan, says nothing can be achieved by war

Supreme Court judge Justice BR Gavai, who is scheduled to take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, on Sunday supported the ceasefire agreement reached between India and Pakistan after four days of military action heavy from both sides on land, air, and sea.

Speaking during an informal conversation with mediapersons at his residence, Justice Gavai said that war could never be termed as a good option. There were two examples of State conflicts currently going on in the world, which showed that nothing could be achieved by an armed battle between two nations.

Regarding the Pahalgam terror attack, the CJI-designate said that he came to know about the tragic incident through newspapers in morning and was extremely sad.

Since CJI Sanjiv Khanna was out of the country, Justice Gavai said he apprised him about the incident, after which it was decided that the Supreme Court would observe two minutes of silence over the massacre.

Being responsible citizens of the country, the judges were also concerned about these issues. When the country was going through a crisis, the Supreme Court could not remain aloof from it, he said, adding that the Apex Court also issued a press release condemning the incident.

Referring to his visit to Manipur, Justice Gavai said an old woman there said, ‘Welcome to your home.’ At that moment, the Apex Court judge said, he felt unity and belongingness.

He further said that judges should not work sitting in ‘ivory towers’ or closed rooms. They should maintain communication with the public.

The CJI-designate said that he would not accept any post after retirement. Once a person has held the post of CJI, he should not take any further responsibility, he added.

Regarding the comments being made on the Supreme Court, Justice Gavai said that everyone knew that the real supremacy was of the Constitution.

He expressed happiness on becoming the first Buddhist CJI, stating that it was a coincidence that he would take oath as CJI on the very next day of Buddha Purnima. It would be a proud moment, added Justice Gavai.
