A Delhi court has allowed former JNU student and activist Umar Khalid to leave jail on a short-term bail so he can attend his sister’s wedding later this month. The order was issued by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai, who approved interim bail for the period December 16 to December 29, 2025, subject to a personal bond and two sureties of ₹20,000 each.
The court noted that Khalid’s sister is set to get married on December 27 and permitted the temporary release with certain restrictions. During the bail period, Khalid must avoid social media, keep his interactions limited to relatives, close friends, and family guests, and remain either at home or at the locations where the wedding events will take place.
Khalid has been in custody since September 2020 in connection with the alleged conspiracy related to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, facing charges under various IPC sections as well as the UAPA. Although he had requested bail from December 14 to 29, the court slightly adjusted the dates in its order.
This is not his first instance of obtaining temporary bail for a family function—he was similarly allowed to attend a cousin’s wedding in December 2024. Meanwhile, his regular bail plea in the main case is still awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court.
