A Delhi sessions court has declined to grant bail to Olympic medal-winning wrestler Sushil Kumar in the ongoing trial related to the murder of fellow wrestler Sagar Dhankar, citing the seriousness of the charges and concerns over the pending examination of key witnesses.
The order was passed by the Rohini Courts, where the judge noted that several material witnesses are yet to depose and that releasing the accused at this stage could pose a risk of witness intimidation or interference with the trial process. The court also took into account the gravity of the offence and the circumstances surrounding the case.
Sushil Kumar has been in judicial custody since May 2021, following his arrest in connection with the violent incident that took place at Chhatrasal Stadium, Delhi. The altercation, allegedly arising out of a property-related dispute, resulted in the death of 27-year-old Sagar Dhankar and left others injured.
While the defence argued that Kumar has spent a prolonged period in custody and that multiple witnesses have already been examined, the court observed that these factors alone were insufficient to justify bail. It further noted that the Supreme Court had earlier cancelled the bail granted to Kumar, reinforcing the need for caution in reconsidering his release.
Emphasising that bail in serious criminal cases must be evaluated in light of public interest, witness safety, and the integrity of the trial, the court concluded that no grounds were made out for granting relief at this stage.
Accordingly, the bail application was rejected, and Sushil Kumar will continue to remain in custody as the trial progresses.
