Enforcement Directorate flags alleged obstruction in I-PAC searches, moves Supreme Court against Bengal Government

12/01/2026BlogNo Comments

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has once again approached the Supreme Court, alleging that the West Bengal government obstructed its investigation during recent search operations connected to the alleged coal scam. The central agency has accused the state administration of deliberately disrupting raids conducted at the offices of political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) in Kolkata.

In its petition, the ED claimed that its officials faced resistance from state authorities while carrying out searches on January 8. The agency alleged that police personnel and other state officials interfered with the lawful exercise of its powers, leading to delays and the possible removal of key documents and electronic devices from the premises.

The ED further alleged that the interference occurred on the directions of the state leadership and that such actions severely undermined its ability to conduct a fair and effective investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). It has sought directions from the apex court to safeguard evidence and ensure that central agencies can function without obstruction during investigations.

The West Bengal government has pushed back against these claims, terming the ED’s allegations baseless and politically motivated. It has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court, requesting that no orders be passed without granting the state an opportunity to present its side.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has publicly defended the state’s actions, asserting that the materials seized during the raids were related to political strategy and not linked to any financial wrongdoing. She accused the ED of overstepping its jurisdiction and misusing investigative powers.

The case adds to the ongoing confrontation between the Centre and the West Bengal government, with the Supreme Court now set to examine allegations of federal overreach, state interference, and the limits of investigative authority.
