Gujarat HC notes no effort to prevent import of banned threads

30/01/2025BlogNo Comments

The Gujarat High Court has noted that despite its previous directions, the state authorities had not taken adequate proactive steps to prevent the import and manufacturing of banned threads.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi recently issued an order in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) addressing the issue of banned threads used during kite flying.

The court observed that the public still believes that cotton threads coated with glass do not pose a threat to human and bird lives.

To curb this practice, the court emphasized the need for the state authorities to adopt a foolproof mechanism to prevent the import and manufacturing of banned threads.

This can be achieved by engaging manufacturers, traders, and users.

The court also noted that the steps taken by the state agencies for the current year 2025 were inadequate and not initiated in a timely manner.

However, considering the onset of the festival, the court did not issue any further directions.

Instead, it posted the matter for September 12, 2025, to ensure compliance for 2026.
