The Gujarat High Court has issued a significant order directing the state government to ensure compliance with animal welfare laws in the state.
The order was passed in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one Narendra Singh Chhtrasinh Rana, highlighting the cruel treatment of animals in the state.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi noted that the state government had constituted District Level Societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals, as required under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
However, the court observed that despite this, there were still instances of cruel treatment of animals in the state.
The court directed the state government to ensure that the District Level Societies were functioning effectively and that the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, were being strictly enforced.
The court also directed the state government to collect and collate information on the use of glue traps to catch animals, particularly rodents, and to place this information before the court.
The matter is listed on December 20, 2024 for further hearing.
