Justice Yashwant Varma, who is currently facing an in-house inquiry over the alleged recovery of unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 15 crore from his official residence in Delhi, took oath as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on Saturday.
Justice Varma took oath in a private setting within his chamber, unlike the formal ceremonies organised by High Courts for oath-taking of judges.
On March 21, the sitting judge of the Delhi High Court was embroiled in a major controversy after the alleged recovery of Rs 15 crore cash from his Tughlak Road residence in Delhi on the night of March 14, following a fire incident.
On March 22, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna constituted a three-member committee to conduct an in-house inquiry into the allegations.
Justice Varma termed the allegations as totally preposterous and claimed that he was being framed in a conspiracy to malign him.
On March 24, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the repatriation of Justice Varma from the Delhi High Court to his parent High Court in Allahabad High Court.
On March 28, the Union of India notified the repatriation of Justice Varma.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea has been filed in the Allahabad High Court seeking a directive to the Chief Justice of the High Court to refrain from administering the oath of office to Justice Varma.
