The National Green Tribunal has directed the Commissioner of Lucknow Municipal Corporation and the District Magistrate Lucknow to appear virtually on the next hearing date and report on actions taken to address the issue of rising plastic waste in Lucknow and the hazard created on account of its improper management.
The Principal Bench comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Expert Member Dr A Senthil Vel heard an Original Application focusing on the rising plastic waste in Lucknow and its improper management.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) submitted their responses.
The CPCB counsel highlighted that the Municipal Corporation Lucknow failed to disclose solid waste and plastic waste components accurately.
Additionally, the UPPCB’s disclosure was inconsistent.
The counsel mentioned that Eco Green, previously contracted for solid waste management, had an unpaid environmental compensation of 56 crores.
The current contractor, Bhumi Green, has a disposal capacity of 700 TPD, falling short of the 2395 TPD waste generation within the municipal limits.
The NGT impleaded the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Lucknow and the District Magistrate Lucknow as respondents, directing them to appear virtually on the next hearing date and report on actions taken to address the issue.
