The National Green Tribunal (NGT) took Suo Motu cognizance of a news article relates to a gas leak and blast at Myanmar Chemical Company located in Shalgaon MIDC, Kadegaon tehsil in Sangli, Maharashtra, resulting in three deaths, including two women and nine hospitalizations.
The Original Application is registered suo-moto on the basis of the news item dated November 22, 2024.
As per the article, the explosion of a reactor at the plant led to the release of chemical fumes, believed to be ammonia.
It alleges that due to the gas leak, 12 people were affected and rushed to nearby hospitals were three people succumbed to the exposure.
The Principal Bench comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr A Senthil Vel noted that no compensation had been paid to the victims’ families.
The case attracts provisions of the Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Citing a similar case, the NGT referred to its previous order awarding compensation to victims’ families.
The Tribunal impleaded the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and District Magistrate, Sangli, as respondents, directing them to file responses.
The NGT transferred the case to the Western Zonal Bench at Pune for further action, listing it for hearing on February 7, 2025.
