Pahalgam terror attack: PIL filed in Supreme Court seeks safety measures for tourists

In the wake of the recent terror attack at Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran valley near Pahalgam that claimed 28 lives and left scores injured, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking safety measures for tourists.

Filed by Advocate Vishal Tiwari, the PIL sought directions to the Union Home Ministry and the States to take safety measures for the protection of those visiting hill states and remote places, along with the deployment of armed forces in places where visitors gathered in large numbers.

It further sought directions to establish proper medical facilities in tourist places, especially in remote hilly and valley areas, in order to ensure prompt medical aid during emergency situations.

The petition contended that the economy of most North Indian states mainly depended on tourism, as a large number of tourists visited hill stations and other such places during the summer season.

Noting that terrorist attacks may reduce and impact the economy of the tourism sector, the PIL submitted that by putting such measures in place would protect the tourists from such attacks.

Noting that during the terrorist attack yesterday, there were no security arrangements in Pahalgam, despite the health resort being a sensitive area, the petitioner demanded armed security in such places.

It would ensure that those coming for sight-seeing and to enjoy the beauty of nature, could do so without any fear, contended the plea.

It further sought directions to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims planning to undertake Amarnath Yatra in July this year.
