President Droupadi Murmu appoints former Supreme Court judge Justice V Ramasubramanian as Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday appointed former judge of the Supreme Court, Justice V Ramasubramanian, as Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The official notification said that in exercise of the power conferred on the President of India by sub-section (1) of Section 4 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice V Ramasubramanian (Retd), to be the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission with effect from the date he assumed charge of his office.

Born on June 30, 1958, Justice Ramasubramanian finished his graduation in chemistry at Vivekananda College in Chennai before doing his law in the Madras Law College. On February 16, 1983, he enrolled in the Bar and was appointed additional judge of the court on July 31, 2006. He was made a permanent judge on November 9, 2009.

Justice Ramasubramanian authored scores of scholarly judgments in his parent High Court before being transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on April 27, 2016.

When the High Court was bifurcated, Justice Ramasubramanian was retained as a judge of the High Court of Telangana at Hyderabad with effect from January 1, 2019. He was elevated as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on June 22, 2019. He became a judge of the Supreme Court on September 23, 2019. He attained superannuation in the Supreme Court in June 2023.
