President nominates Supreme Court judge Justice Surya Kant as Executive Chairman of NALSA

President Draupadi Murmu has nominated Supreme Court judge, Justice Surya Kant, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

A notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice said that in exercise of powers under Section 3(2)(b) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the
President of India has nominated Justice Surya Kant, judge of the Supreme Court, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), with effect from May 14, 2025.

As per the conventional norms, the second senior judge of the Apex Court is appointed as the NALSA Executive Chairman.

The present Executive Chairman of NALSA, Justice BR Gavai, is scheduled to take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, following the retirement of incumbent CJI Sanjiv Khanna on May 13.

Justice Kant is currently the Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
