Punjab and Haryana High Court disposes PIL raising concern about delay in appointing State Information Commissioners in Punjab

29/01/2025BlogNo Comments

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed raising concerns about the alleged delay in appointing State Information Commissioners in Punjab.

The petitioner sought directions to the State of Punjab to fill the vacant posts.

In response to the court’s notice, the State of Punjab filed a status report, sworn by the Under Secretary, Public Grievance Punjab.

The report revealed that the process of selecting the State Information Commissioners was at its final stage, with the Selection Committee having finalized the names of two candidates.

The report further stated that the file was awaiting the Governor’s approval.

The court observed that the State of Punjab had shown bona fides in the matter, and it was apparent that the appointment of the State Information Commissioners was imminent, pending the Governor’s approval.

Therefore, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel deemed it appropriate to dispose of the petition, granting liberty to the petitioner to re-visit the court if the appointments were not made.
