Satpeer Dargah demolition: Supreme Court seeks explanation from Bombay High Court Registrar over non-listing of urgent matter

17/04/2025BlogNo Comments

The Supreme Court has asked the Bombay High Court Registrar to explain why a petition challenging a demolition notice issued by the Nashik Municipal Corporation against the Satpeer Dargah was not listed on an urgent basis.

The Bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Joymalya Bagchi on Wednesday stayed the demolition notice and observed that it failed to understand why the petition, which was filed before the High Court on April 8, was yet to be listed.

The Counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that they have been trying to get the matter listed everyday.

Noting the urgency in the matter since the religious structure could have been demolished, the Apex Court said it was resorting to the extraordinary measure of staying the demolition because as per the petitioner, the High Court was yet to hear the case, despite repeated requests.

The top court of the country directed the Registrar General of the High Court to send a report about the listing of the writ petition and listed the matter for further hearing on April 21.

The Dargah has been in the eye of a storm, with civic authorities carrying out a demolition drive around the structure.
