Supreme Court agrees to hear journalists’ plea alleging physical assault by Madhya Pradesh Police over sand mafia story

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on an urgent basis, a petition filed by two journalists alleging physical assault by the Madhya Pradesh Police over their story on sand mafia.

Appearing before the Bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, the Counsel for the petitioners submitted that the alleged incident happened in May and the petitioners were apprehending arrest in false and fabricated cases (by Bhind Police).

Terming the matter as very serious, the Counsel apprised the Apex Court that the mediapersons were beaten in a police station. They had rushed to Delhi to seek refuge.

When the top court of the country asked why the petitioners did not approach the High Court, the Counsel mentioned financial constraints and said that following threats to their lives, the petitioners came to Delhi seeking refuge and have obtained protection.

Asserting that the petitioners’ lives were in danger, the Counsel said that the Press Club of India has condemned the incident.

While listing the case for urgent listing, the Bench told the Counsel that she was running a risk. In case the matter was listed before the current Bench, she knew the conclusion, it added.

The Counsel contended that she would anyway try to persuade the Apex Court to the best of her ability.
