The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Justice Sujoy Paul, presently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, for the post of the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
The Collegium made the recommendation at its meeting held on January 9, 2026, in exercise of its consultative role under Articles 217 and 222 of the Constitution of India and in accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure governing judicial appointments.
The elevation was based on Justice Paul’s seniority, integrity, administrative competence, and long-standing experience across multiple High Courts. It further aligned with the principles laid down in the Second and Third Judges Cases, which crystallised the Collegium system and underscored primacy of judicial opinion in appointments to constitutional courts.
Justice Paul commenced his legal career after enrolling with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990. Over two decades at the Bar, he developed a wide-ranging practice encompassing constitutional law, civil and industrial disputes, service jurisprudence, and allied branches, appearing before the High Court, subordinate courts, and statutory tribunals.
He was elevated to the Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur on May 27, 2011, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on April 14, 2014. During his tenure, he was involved in adjudication of complex constitutional and administrative law matters, contributing to the development of service law and public law jurisprudence.
Subsequently, Justice Paul was transferred to the Telangana High Court, where he also held the office of Acting Chief Justice, before being repatriated to the Calcutta High Court. Upon his assumption of office there, he took oath as a judge of the Calcutta High Court and was later entrusted with the responsibilities of Acting Chief Justice, overseeing both judicial administration and roster allocation.
