The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari V Bhatt in a cheating case linked to a film investment dispute. The couple had challenged earlier orders after being denied relief in connection with allegations that they misrepresented a movie project and failed to return substantial funds invested by the complainant.
While granting bail, the Apex court observed that the dispute appeared to arise from a commercial transaction and indicated that such matters may be better addressed through settlement rather than prolonged criminal proceedings. Taking note of the nature of the allegations and the financial aspects involved, the bench emphasized the scope for resolving the conflict amicably.
The Court also directed the parties to explore mediation and referred the matter to the Supreme Court’s mediation mechanism to attempt a negotiated settlement. It clarified that the mediation process would not affect the merits of the criminal case, which will proceed in accordance with law.
The case stems from allegations that a significant investment was made in a proposed film project with assurances of returns that did not materialize, leading to the registration of criminal charges. The Supreme Court’s order provides interim relief to the accused while encouraging efforts to settle the underlying financial dispute through dialogue.
