The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the NGO Rohingya Human Rights Initiative to give residential details about the Rohingya refugees who were finding it difficult to get admission of their children in Delhi schools.
Noting that there should not be any discrimination over education of children, the Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh directed the NGO to furnish address proof of Rohingya immigrants living in Delhi, so that it could examine the relief that could be extended to them.
The Bench further ordered the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative not to disclose personal details about minor children.
The top court of the country passed the order on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the NGO seeking directions to ensure that school admission and government benefits were given to Rohingya refugees without any insistence on Aadhaar cards and irrespective of their citizenship status.
Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the petitioner organisation, contended that Rohingya refugees were facing a desperate situation. They were not able to get admissions of their children to schools in Delhi.
When the Apex Court sought their residential details, Gonsalves said the Rohingyas had cards issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) that recognised their refugee status.
The Bench then observed that once the details related to the surroundings and living conditions of Rohingya immigrants were submitted, it would look into how to extend relief.
The matter will be heard again on February 28.
