Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking an independent investigation into the violence that reportedly erupted during an event linked to football icon Lionel Messi. The petition calls for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incidents, citing concerns over law and order and the alleged failure of local authorities to prevent unrest.
According to the plea, the violence disrupted public peace and raised serious questions about crowd management and security arrangements at the high-profile event. Adhikari has argued that the presence of an international sports figure drew large gatherings, making it the responsibility of the administration to ensure adequate safety measures. The alleged lapses, he contends, warrant a thorough and impartial investigation beyond the scope of routine policing.
The petition further claims that those responsible for instigating the violence have not been effectively identified or held accountable. By seeking an SIT probe under the supervision of the High Court, Adhikari aims to ensure transparency and restore public confidence in the investigation process.
The matter is expected to come up at Calcutta High Court, for hearing where the court will consider whether the circumstancess matters necessitate a court-monitored probe. The case has added to the ongoing political debate over governance and security in the state, with the opposition demanding accountability and strict action against those involved.
