Why This Story Must Remain Front Page News

The is the second time in just a few weeks that India Legal has chosen to put Donald Trump and his tariff crusade on its cover. Some might ask why we are returning to the same subject so quickly. The answer, I believe, lies in the gravity of the moment and the sheer scale of harm being unleashed—not just on Americans, but on the interconnected world we all inhabit.

Kenneth Tiven’s compelling lead story in this issue is not just a searing indictment of incoherent economic policy—it is a warning. The latest wave of tariffs, announced with presidential flourish, but without meaningful rationale, is not merely an exercise in flawed economics. It is a calculated move that reeks of political vengeance, personal ego, and reckless disregard for the long-term consequences. As Tiven points out, these are not policies born of strategy or expertise; they are tantrums disguised as governance.

What’s more alarming is the devastation these actions threaten to bring—not just in Wall Street boardrooms or government agencies, but at kitchen tables across America and beyond. Hardworking, decent families—the backbone of every society—stand to suffer first and most. Prices will rise. Jobs will be lost. Hope will wither. And this pain will not be confined to the United States. As the global economy ripples and recoils, communities thousands of miles away—in Asia, Europe, Africa—will feel the aftershocks. This is economic nationalism with a destructive international reach.

Even more disturbing is the hollowing out of America’s scientific and medical research ecosystem. Tiven’s revelations about the deliberate dismantling of cancer and Alzheimer’s research programmes are as shocking as they are heartbreaking. When political vengeance reaches the laboratories that hold humanity’s future cures, we are in unprecedented territory.

We believe in shining a light where it’s most needed. This isn’t about partisan politics—it’s about truth, accountability, and protecting the lives and futures of people everywhere. That is why we return, again, to Trump and tariffs on our cover. Because the stakes are not just high—they are existential.

If we do not bear witness to these times with clarity and courage, we risk becoming silent accomplices to their consequences.
