Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Rajesh Bindal has been appointed Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), marking his return to judicial administration following his retirement from the Supreme Court earlier this year.
Justice Bindal confirmed his appointment to Bar & Bench on November 5.
He succeeds former Supreme Court Judge Justice Ashok Bhushan, whose tenure as NCLAT Chairperson came to an end on July 4, 2026.
Following Justice Bhushan’s departure, Justice Yogesh Khanna, a judicial member of the appellate tribunal, was appointed as its officiating Chairperson with effect from July 5. The Central Government subsequently extended his tenure in October, pending the appointment of a regular Chairperson.
Justice Bindal retired from the Supreme Court on April 15, 2026, after serving as a judge of the apex court for over three years. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on February 13, 2023, after serving as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
Born on April 16, 1961, in Ambala, Haryana, Justice Bindal began practising law before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in September 1985. He was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 22, 2006.
During his judicial career, he also served at the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the Calcutta High Court before taking oath as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 11, 2021.
His appointment assumes significance as the NCLAT serves as the principal appellate forum for adjudicating challenges arising from decisions of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), besides exercising appellate jurisdiction in matters under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, and the Competition Act, 2002.
The tribunal plays a crucial role in India’s corporate dispute resolution framework, particularly in matters concerning insolvency proceedings, corporate restructuring, mergers and competition law.
